Tim Barber is no old school fashion photographer–you most likely won’t see his subjects voguing in front of a gray muslin backdrop á la Patrick Demachelier. Instead, Barber’s models are raw, unaffected, and wildly alive, and they’re often placed in graphic settings or spectacular landscapes. In fact, Barber often makes nature the dominant element of his compositions, much like Caspar David Friedrich and the sublime painters of the 18th century. When he’s not shooting editorials and catalogues for brands like Stella McCarthey, Linda Farrow, Opening Ceremony, and Nike, the photographer captures his life and other young artists and friends, including Ryan McGinley, Aurel Schmidt, Chloe Sevigny, Alexander Wang, and Miho Aoki and Thuy Pham (of United Bamboo!) who are part of a community he has helped shape by exhibiting art work on the website Tiny Vices and editing books with the publisher, OHWOW. His book, Welcome to Earth, released in December and now available at Dashwood Books, includes many of these stunning personal works.
