About Us

Gargyle is a lifestyle boutique and brand founded by husband and wife team, Don Vu and Nhung Nguyen. Friends since college and married for over 8 years, the couple connected from the beginning through a shared passion for music, design, fashion, food, and well... leisure sports. Moving to NYC after school, the two instantly identified with the Downtown fashion and music scene, but never abandoning their sporty roots, they found balance on the cracked asphalt of the city’s tennis courts and public golf links.

A few years after getting married, Nhung and Don decided to do something they’d both always dreamed of: opening their own store. They realized that there wasn’t a shop or brand that spoke to their distinct sensibilities, and they knew that there was a like-minded niche that would get their smart/sporty/leisure look. Cheeky country club references, a taste for luxury, and their own Downtown experiences were their biggest creative influences, and Gargyle was born.

Hard to believe now, but in 2007 most independent brands and retail stores did not have a web presence. Nhung and Don recognized the opportunity in e-commerce though and flipped the retail script by decidedly launching Gargyle online first. A Lower East Side brick and mortar store followed a couple years later, complete with a music studio in the basement and astroturf on the floor to remind visitors of its Wimbledon roots.

Since pioneering an up and coming part of NYC where Lower East Side and Chinatown meet, Gargyle as a retailer has become a Downtown fashion fixture and go-to among musicians, designers, creative professionals, fashion mavens, and celebrities alike. Having established a worldwide reputation for presenting a strong point of view and curating interesting, modern classics, Gargyle is now also regarded as a brand in itself by its loyal customers.
